The children’s book kids and adults love with an underdog to root for!

A little hound who just wants love. When she ends up in a pack of meanies, can this big-hearted dog find the courage to sniff out a better life?

Anxious, afraid and hungry most of the time, all Weeza wants is a loving family. When her owner takes her to the woods, she’s expected to hunt deer…but soon finds herself in world of trouble. Without thinking, she bolts into the unknown.

Now she’s all alone. And even though Weeza left behind a life she dreaded, at least it was one she knew. But if she’s brave enough to try, will this sweet hound find a special family that welcomes her gentle soul?

Weeza’s Great Escape is for ages six and up (but kids and adults of all ages can enjoy this story) and was inspired by a heartwarming true story of courage, hope and the power of kindness.

Meet the real Weeza
A young hound dog a beautiful shade of auburn showed up at our property on January 15, 2020. She appeared malnourished and abandoned, likely by a hunter who didn’t think she had panned out as the huntress they hoped. She seemed abused by evidence of her skittish, anxious and distrusting behavior, but she stuck around when we showered her with love, kindness…and food.

It took time for her to trust us, but every day she made continuous strides to overcome her fears and give in to all the goodness we could provide (and let me just add my husband loves dogs more than most humans, and is pretty much a dog whisperer. His instincts and knowledge are what guided us, along with some help sought from others).

Ultimately, Weeza chose to stick around, and we chose to care for her. It’s been a wonderful, heartwarming and life-affirming true story to witness and take part in. As I shared her story, little Weeza fast became an online sensation, bringing joy to many who bore witness to her brave heart.

What does her name mean?
Weeza is a funny, shortened word for weasel. Her behavior around snatching food bits before taking off in a darting kind of trot was a little weasel-y, and made us laugh. The name stuck.

How old is she?
Weeza was approximately one when she arrived in January 2020, by the veterinarian’s estimate.

Is she a house dog now?
Weeza is not a typical house dog in the way many find with their domesticated pets. She is so anxious by nature that she needs to have an escape route, which largely means she would not come indoors for a long while, deciding to stay outdoors and sleeping and eating on our screened-in back porch. Over time, we coaxed her inside for mealtimes, and when something frightens her outside (such as thunderstorms), she runs inside and hunkers down under our bed in an all-fire hurry! In July 2022, she showed some interest in spending the night under the bed, and a month later, it's become a regular habit, so that's a good sign. She still prefers to spend her days sleeping, playing, going for walks with her human mama, finding water holes to lay in, and living her best life.
